ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores subverted expectations--what happens when things aren’t the way we presume. This takes shape in writing about finding disconnection where we expect and connection where we do not, composing sound art that puts the listener at the intersection of the familiar and the absurd, and photographing objects in unexpected places.

Our chaotic and beautiful world requires the human brain to rely on set concepts, biases, and projections in order to navigate and adapt. Examples range from behavior expectations for individuals or groups, to expectations that objects to appear in certain places to the exclusion of others and to remain there, and for certain things to unfold in a familiar structure as with the case of music or story.

I use multiple media including writing, audio, photography, and interactive digital forms to engage audiences in complex affective experiences. To that end, I create playful experiments that facilitate tension, confusion, and wobbliness that can transmute way to pathos, wonder, and delight in ways that challenging experiences enable us to develop strength, confidence, and resilience if we let them.
